Mar 27, 2025
Welcome to Maven Musings! I'm thrilled to connect with you. Biweekly, we’ll discuss Global inclusivity, technology, women’s empowerment, and healthy workplace culture through my unique and joyful lens. Join me on a journey of inspiration, positivity, and creativity.
Our stories define us. In Women's History Month, seeing the recognition of women excelling in technology is inspiring. These innovators break barriers and redefine tech's potential. They create opportunities, solve complex issues, and pave the way for future innovators. Their actions highlight how impactful it is when women lead and shape their surroundings.
In the tech industry, where male figures often dominate the landscape, women bring a fresh perspective that makes a huge impact. Whether through AI, data science, or cloud computing, women disrupt traditional thinking and drive technology forward meaningfully. And what’s even more inspiring is how these women encourage others to follow in their footsteps through their resilience, creativity, and leadership.
To me, Women’s History Month is about seeking out stories and shouting out goodness, maybe a little louder than usual, as every month, IMHO, is Women’s History Month. Thousands of women have moved the technology industry forward every day for centuries. Here are a few stories of innovators that inspire me.
Reshma Saujani, the founder of Girls Who Code, is a powerful tech voice. Reshma’s mission to close the gender gap in technology has inspired thousands of young girls to pursue careers in coding and engineering. Girls Who Code offers free coding programs that equip girls with the skills they need to succeed in tech. What started as an idea has become a global movement empowering young women everywhere. Reshma’s belief that we need to "teach girls to be brave, not perfect" has become the rallying cry for many working to create a more inclusive tech community. She is a beacon of hope and a reminder of how one woman’s vision can change the trajectory of an entire generation.
And we can’t forget Kimberly Bryant, the founder of Black Girls Code, an organization dedicated to teaching young women of color coding and providing them with the tools to become leaders in the tech field. Kimberly has opened the door for countless Black girls to see themselves in the tech world through her work. Black Girls Code is reshaping the narrative of who belongs in STEM fields, and Kimberly’s leadership is breaking down racial and gender barriers, creating opportunities that didn’t exist before. By equipping young women of color with the skills to succeed in the tech industry, Kimberly is shaping the future of technology in deeply impactful ways for underrepresented communities.
Then there is Dr. Fei-Fei Li, a professor at Stanford University and a pioneer in artificial intelligence. Dr. Li is best known for her work in computer vision, specifically in developing ImageNet. This large visual database has profoundly impacted the development of deep learning algorithms. Through her work, Dr. Li has opened new doors for AI technology and has been a passionate advocate for diversity in AI. Her research transforms industries like healthcare and autonomous driving and emphasizes the need for ethical and inclusive approaches to AI. Dr. Li’s work highlights the importance of ensuring that AI is designed with diverse perspectives, addressing bias, and ensuring technology equitably serves all people. She’s a leading figure in shaping AI's future, ensuring women and marginalized communities have a voice in how these technologies evolve.
These women share a common thread: they understand that tech is not just about creating the next big thing; it’s about creating solutions that address the needs of diverse people and communities. They are committed to using their positions of influence to advocate for equity and redefine what it means to be a leader in the tech industry.
As we celebrate Women’s History Month, I am reminded of the importance of supporting and amplifying women's voices in tech. We are at a pivotal moment in history where women’s contributions profoundly shape the tech industry's future. But we still have work to do. We must continue to challenge the status quo, create spaces where women can thrive, and ensure that the next generation of innovators—especially women of color, LGBTQ+ women, and other marginalized groups—have the resources and opportunities they need to succeed.
In my role at Microsoft, I strive to create environments that foster this kind of inclusion, where the diverse perspectives of my peers and our community members are not only heard but celebrated. We work to build community programs and connections that empower individuals to be their authentic selves, contributing to a more innovative and inclusive workplace culture.
To all the women innovators—whether in tech, arts, science, business, or beyond—thank you for breaking down barriers, leading with courage and creativity, and making the world a better place. Keep pushing boundaries and inspiring the next generation of leaders. Your voices matter. We need you, and we see you.
