Welcome to Maven Musings! I'm thrilled to connect with you. Biweekly, we’ll discuss Global inclusivity, technology, women’s empowerment, and healthy workplace culture through my unique and joyful lens. Join me on a journey of inspiration, positivity, and creativity.

Let’s be real: the word "networking" often gets a bad rap. It conjures images of stiff mixers, awkward small talk, and endless LinkedIn connection requests. But what if we flipped the script? What if networking wasn’t about collecting business cards, but about cultivating genuine relationships that nurture our careers, creativity, and community?

As someone who has built a career at the intersection of storytelling, technology, and community, I’ve seen firsthand how meaningful connections can open doors you didn’t even know existed. Whether it's sharing a stage, collaborating on a project, or being considered for a new opportunity, nearly every big milestone in my professional life has had one common thread: people.

Relationship Capital Is Real

Your resume might get you in the door, but your relationships help you stay in the room—and move to the next one. Relationship capital is a real and powerful force. It’s built slowly, with care and reciprocity, and it pays dividends over time. It’s what happens when you check in just to say hello, celebrate someone’s win, or recommend a friend for a role without expecting anything in return.

Start with Intention

Before you jump into networking mode, pause and ask yourself: What kind of people energize me? Who do I admire or want to learn from? Who do I want to uplift or support? The most authentic networks are built on shared values, aligned purpose, and mutual growth.

Sometimes that looks like reaching out to someone you met once at a conference. Sometimes it’s commenting meaningfully on someone’s LinkedIn post. Sometimes it’s showing up consistently to a community meetup, even when you’re tired. Connection doesn’t always have to be grand; it just has to be real.

The Quiet Power of Follow-Up

Want to stand out? Follow up. Send a note after a great conversation. Share a resource that made you think of someone. Follow-through is underrated and overappreciated. It shows people you value their time and presence.

I still remember someone from an event I spoke at years ago who reached out months later with an article I’d love. That tiny gesture sparked a meaningful connection—and led to a collaboration neither of us expected.

Your Network Is Not Just Who You Know

It’s who knows you, and what they remember you for. Be intentional about the story you’re telling with your presence, online and offline. Show up consistently. Share what lights you up. Be curious. Be kind. People remember how you made them feel—and that impression becomes your invitation to the next opportunity.

Nurture, Don’t Just Reach Out

Networking isn’t just a one-time exchange. It’s a living, breathing ecosystem of relationships that need attention. I like to keep a short list of folks I try to check in with quarterly. Not because I need something, but because they matter to me. Invest in people, not just prospects.

A Challenge for You (and Me)

This month, I challenge you to reconnect with three people in your network—no agenda, just connection. Send a "thinking of you" note, or invite someone for a virtual coffee chat. Ask a colleague how they’re really doing. See what happens when you lead with curiosity instead of a pitch. I also am a raving fan of snail mail. I love an old fashioned letter, card or postcard. (I not so secretly want to be the Postmaster General). And www.postable.com is a fave as well for this sort of thing.

Your next big opportunity will probably not come from a job board or an application portal—it may come from someone who remembers how you made them feel.

In community and connection,

Heather
