Our heroes are a reflection of our best selves. We model what we see in all our media, especially in our stories of might, good defeating evil, justice, joy, and even everyday life, where we all work to be the best humans we can be. Superheroes, comics, and tales of our shared history all reflect the full diversity of the human experience. Igniting more conversations, storytelling, and sharing what new developments make us all feel not so alone in the world, driving and inspiring us to be our most authentic selves. I couldn’t be more excited to continue the conversation from last year’s social justice, diversity, intersectionality, and belonging panel with this year’s fantastic group of artists.
I got up that morning thinking I was going to a doctor’s appointment. My thyroid is acting up again so I was Hashtag Adulting. The thing was, I also had a ticket to be in the live studio audience for the RuPaul show, a new talk show taping a three-week test to run on select Fox stations (New York, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Houston, San Francisco, Minneapolis, and Charlotte).
I was in my local Marina del Rey Ralph’s grocery store and came upon two giggling and very excited young women in front of an impressive Hot Wheels display. A longtime devotee (As you can see, I still have the blue plastic Hot Wheels case jammed full from when I was a kid) so I stopped to check out the display.
Reading the last email where someone in my life decided to put me and my work down in front of other people I started thinking about my How to Kick Fear and Toxicity Out of the Workplace presentation, and I came to the following:
We have three choices as we navigate dealing with toxic people:
The path of least resistance — Keeping quiet, lowering expectations trying to get through with as few confrontations as possible
The path of confrontation — Getting down and getting into it
The path of “I’m done” — To turn on one’s heel and simply walk away.
Come to a session. Join a meetup. Engage online. Celebrate together.
