Ready for Microsoft Ignite? Event Maven Tips to Rock It!

#MSIgnite 2018 will be the third Microsoft Ignite I’ve attended (my first TechEds were Barcelonaand Dallas, TX in 2003). Microsoft Ignite is Microsoft’s largest ITPro/Dev event of the year featuring hundreds of technical sessions and hands-on workshops, a massive expo floor, tons of parties and, something I am very proud to be a part of, a whole track devoted to learning about and fostering Diversity and Inclusion.

As an Event Maven who used to produce these events for Microsoft, I know a few ins and outs to get the most knowledge, networking, and fun out of it.

Here are some tips & tricks to help you create a productive and memorable Microsoft Ignite experience.

A Birthday Thank You from Las Vegas.

A Birthday Thank You from Las Vegas.

From a city where I turned 21, a long time ago, I wanted to say thank you to the loving Joyner family for having me tag along to their family reunion at The Jockey Club way back when to celebrate with Shannan, Beth, Tina, and Meganne, my wonderful high school girlfriends. I turned 21 on the dot in the Aladdin which is now where Planet Hollywood stands — that was such a great trip. Respects to Dick and Dottie Joyner who are no longer with us and were such kind, dear, fun people who made me part of their family during my high school years in Wheaton, IL.

Power to the People: A Look Into The Activism of Cancer Survivor and Social Justice Warrior, Jimmy “Taboo” Gomez

When you have a platform of millions of fans and followers, there are ways to use that platform for good and to empower others. As a member of the globally known band The Black Eyed Peas that is exactly what rapper, singer, songwriter, actor, DJ, activist, and cancer-survivor Jimmy “Taboo” Gomez does every day. Social justice warriors come in many shapes and sizes, and Taboo brings his heart and passion to many groups and issues that are near and dear to him for the betterment of our world.

As a lover of comic books, graphic novels, artists, superheroes movies and TV series I’m giddy about being involved with this project. Who hasn’t spun around like Wonder Woman as a young girl or maybe, um, yesterday? To see her and so many other brilliant superheroes in print, in cool TV series and on the big screen bringing justice to the world makes my heart sing.

Thrilled to announce that I’m moderating my first education/how to panel at this year’s San Diego Comic Con with an amazing group of panelists.

Funk is…. making something out of nothing @Bootsy_Collins @GrandPerfs

Funk is…. making something out of nothing @Bootsy_Collins @GrandPerfs

So, the funk mothership lands and all you see is a beam of light, and a hear a bassline and horns that make your booty shake. And bad ass, shining star Bootsy Collins comes through the entire crowd, walks on water and hugs you. I say hot damn. I’ve been shaking tail to Bootsy, Parliament Funkadelic and James Brown since I was a kid — the bassline and horn sections of that music live in my heart.

Geekricans, #ComicCon #PuertoRico

Geekricans, #ComicCon #PuertoRico

Geekricans is my new favorite word.

Heroes come in many shapes and forms.

Puerto Rico is still recovering from Hurricane Maria.

4,600 people dead.

Countless homes and hearts destroyed.

Attitudes of carelessness avail.

Electricity still not back on many parts of the island.

Recovery isn’t a one-time shot, it is daily and happens over decades.

Puertorriqueños are kicking ass, but they still need our help.

Empathy is Sexy- Art Saves Lives @WeRise_LA

Empathy is Sexy- Art Saves Lives @WeRise_LA

My baseline is joy. But we all have bad days, and things that hurt in our hearts. Fear, toxicity, anger, chronic pain, longing, disappointment, childhood trauma, and adult trauma.

We don’t talk about these things enough. We call them “things”, we let them sit and dwell; we let them fester and make us sick, breed disease, perpetuate self-loathing and catalyze into a world of overmedication, obesity, crime, alcoholism, drug addiction, violence, shame, and suicide.

You never know what is behind someone’s smiling eyes. I try hard to lead with keeping that in mind always.
