Another epic night seeing comedy in Los Angeles. To be glazed, overlaid with a smooth, shiny surface. Yes, that is exactly what Mike Glazer brings to the stage during his monthly comedy cornucopia called Glazed at The Hollywood Improv (The Lab) straight up smooth and shiny goodness. Glazed is like a perfect donut. Sweet, sugary, where you feel a little dirty, a little shy that you maybe ate two or three of those sinful bad boys. (Your secret is safe with me, go ahead have one more. Cause they are DELICIOUS). Third Thursday of the month for the next helping of yum.
I’ve been to Glazed now a handful of times, and Mike’s show (with me being a new girl in town) has been my introduction to the amazing Comedy scene here in Los Angeles. I have huge respect for comedians and love going to see comedy.
The first Glazed I attended had Dave Chappelle drop in and stay for a hell yes impromptu two hour super chill amazing set and a late night dance party/karaoke pop-up that was joyous and surreal. Another night Jerry Seinfeld did a bit about losing his cell phone and texting that killed, 10 feet in front of me. Caitlin Gill was on that night after Chappelle and she had us all in the palm of her hand, brilliantly and we all had our mouths hanging open. All Dave said when she was finished was “that shit was dope” — everyone agreed.
Once I heard this latest show was scheduled I quickly changed my flight back from a biz trip up to Seattle as I always leave Glazed with a smile knowing I’ve caught a one night only happening that was unique and fucking hilarious. And I like things that make me happy and every time I’ve left with a huge grin on my face.
Last night was no exception. The thing about the show, yes there have been some uber famous comics that have shown up, but the heart and strength of Glazed is Mike’s sweet dorm room neighbor manner and razor-sharp wit, usually edged with a dab or a toke. His joyful demeanor married to his utterly amazing lineups of the hottest comedians, DJs, musicians, painters, and magicians, yes magicians and cool people that are out in the zeitgeist today make a tasty treat for a Thursday night pre-weekend outing. The Hollywood Improv (The Lab) is a cozy cabaret space that shares a bar, green room and water closets with The Improv main stage, and they have yummy food — flatbread mushroom pizza and the brussel sprouts are my favorites. And did I mention that a ticket to Glazed is only $10, but do get them before the night of the show.
Yesterday’s, Glazed fantastic line up:
Comedians Asif Ali, Chris Fairbanks, David Gborie, Mike Mulloy, Danielle Perez. Amy Silverburg, and Paige Weldon — all of them unique, on point and Funny AF. Also the stunning Andrew Goldenhersh, Magic Castle Magician of the Year, who blew us all away with his straight jacket Houdini moves. Teachr, a prolific and amazing street artist (who I talked to after for a long time) who created a new piece out of ideas being tossed to him from the audience, Kavanaugh, S/M, and a school bus were the shout-outs. His art is fierce, in the Pentagon, and it was an absolute thrill to meet him.
Glazer seamlessly transitions between comedians by handing out free cannabis products, giving shout-outs to friends and telling stories of a guy hustling in Los Angeles. And cookies don’t forget cookies, snickerdoodles (just regular cookies) with melt in your mouth goodness from Breads & Spreads by Fred who is a sweetheart. Mike also writes for HBO, was nominated for an Emmy, was featured in Rolling Stone, is funny AF as well as being an actor, and podcaster.
Another place to find Mister Glazer, is in the world of podcasts — Mike is one half of the hottest new ‘pot’cast featured this month in Prohbtd — hot pod: Weed + Grub, the other half of this down and dirty dish on dope is my dear friend and goddess of green, Mary Jane Gibson, writer, actor, and on staff with Leafly, which is how I know Mike. They are about to hit their 30th episode, and I have made it a Wednesday night ritual to listen for their hot pod drop as my nightcap before going to bed. They serve up stories and interviews (Tommy Chong, Buck Angel) surrounding culture, hustle, Los Angeles, weed, cooking, cannabis product demos, tests and info, dope guests and as Mary Jane says “spicy stuff”. Their sex toy conference episode is fantastic, well they all are.
So you have two new things to tell Alexa to remind you about, Glazed the Third Thursday of the month at Hollywood Improv (The Lab) and every Wednesday a hot new potcast drops from Weed and Grub.
The last Glazed was packed and sold out, again I predict that this show will continue to do so and a word on the street is that this show and the podcast may be coming to a city near you. So follow all the goodness I’ve linked above for news on that as you won’t want to miss it. Weed + Grub
Thanks, Mike for another great show, Mary Jane for bringing me along to them and I can’t wait to sample some Glazed again, I don’t mind the sticky sweet fingers at all. Nom nom.
